Is it normal for a textbook to be vastly cheaper at amazon, than buying at my UNI bookstore?

Pro asked:

I always thought the bookstore is the same price or cheaper, but they are selling biochem book for $197, then I check amazon and the exact same book (brand new also) sells for $155.
Am i missing something here??

It’s much cheaper to buy online. I bought my books on craigslist. Books in the bookstore were $100-$200 and I bought books for like $40. And sometimes buying used isn’t bad, cause important stuff will be highlighted. When I bought books from people on craigslist sometimes they gave me notes and stuff, it was really nice. alexandra

Amazon is frequently cheaper. As the previous poster stated, make sure that you are comparing the EXACT version, as textbooks are frequently updated for no other reason than to destroy the used book market. NH Guy

Yes it is normal. If the book you are buying on amazon is used might explain why it’s cheaper. My sociology book was 89 at the book store on campus I got the same book on ebay for 11 bucks. it was used but well worth it. If you want to be sure the book on amazon is the exact book you need just check the ISBN and you will know if you have a match. Hope this helps Reba Jean

You are not losing your mind. Books at a University bookstore are normally more expensive than if you were to purchase or rent them online. I used chegg.com to get my books for school and it was a life saver. I think my books were going to cost about $500 if I bought them used at my school’s bookstore, but I rented most of them from chegg.com and I only ended up spending approximately $200 total. Krystol

If you’ve been buying retail all your life, then, yes, you’ve been missing something for a long time. Amazon, like so many other off-price online bookstores, usually has things that are offered at much lower prices. Remember, though, that you may have to pay for delivery, so be sure to factor that in to your prices.

Also, Amazon sellers, much like EBay, come from a variety of places. Make sure you buy from a legitimate seller by checking their rating before you buy. Look for a seller with a nearly flawless rating, or buy from Amazon itself, to ensure that you’ll get what you ask for. If you do that, you’ll come out way ahead. skip742

Yes. Actually I buy my textbooks from Amazon every year. They are much cheaper than book stores.

And make sure you get their free shipping when you buy textbooks from there:

Hope it helps :) Pauline A
