This is something I have been doing in many of my college classes for a while now and I’m wondering if it’s okay to do. I never give them to anyone else and I throw them away when I’m done.
In regard to the people slamming me for being “unethical”:
If what I did was illegal, then that is fine and I thank everyone for answering because that is indeed what I wanted to know. But to call it unethical is where I disagree.
I am a second year college student, paying $8,000 a semester to attend college (out of my own pocket) and expected to spend over $400 a semester on books and supplies. I think the unethical thing here is for textbook companies to charge $200 for a single book that is REQUIRED for a class. I did not copy an entire book, I copied 65 pages. I did not buy from a small, private bookstore that was charging a reasonable price. I bought it from a giant bookstore that buys many books back for about $15 and turns around and sells them for $100. That seems way more unethical to me to rip people off who are trying to get an education and have no choice but to get the books required for a class then me copying 65 pages from a book and returning it.

{prentice hall algebra 1} because i slacked off most of the year and it will most likely make geometry harder for me next year.

would i be able to just plainly buy the textbook elsewhere?

I have a number of textbooks that I would like to get rid of, but I don’t want to just let them go for nothing. But I don’t know if there’s any place that will take back any textbook.

oh and this is two different companies… online is half.com and return will be at the university book store
School starts tomorrow and the syllabus says we need the book asap. The thing is buying online is cheaper buy almost 50%.
So could I buy the book online and in the bookstore so I have one copy immediately and then when the book i bought online comes, could i return that to the bookstore?
return policy is the tuesday on the second week of class… the book should arrive before then

In my defense, I’m a poor college student that can’t afford to pay $150 for each of my seven textbooks…and I really don’t support huge bookstores like Barnes and Noble that buy a textbook back for $15 and then go sell it for $100. I would never do this to a small bookstore that is selling books in an honest fashion.
